Summertime And The Living Is Easy

The definition of ‘Summertime sadness‘ is sitting in an air-conditioned office, swamped with work, day dreaming about my planned summer holiday in Jeffery’s Bay, only to realize it’s been almost two months since my last blog post. I’m starting to think that the hole in my stomach is not hunger or fatigue but rather an aching need to write about fashion.

As it were, my summer day dreams always start with all the things I plan to do come December. Summer weddings, museum hoping and sightseeing, pool parties, cocktails and sundowners  and of course hours at the beach. I have thus put together tips and outfit ideas to inspire your summer daydreams and brighten up your typical summer fete.

For summer 2013 tranquil colours and textures that conjure up images of the sea are very popular. Shades of turquoise, gray-blue, and sea salt are all fantastic summer wardrobe choices!

The Beach

If, like me, you’re planning hours in the sun at the beach then pick your beach outfit like you would fruit—let your eye choose the most attractive, prettiest hue and it will be the sweetest one. Mix things up a little by wearing yellow and black—a killer combo for night or day.

When you head for the sand and surf, it doesn't matter whether you like to show off your curves or hide them, avoid wearing heels to the beach. There’s a time and a place for high heels. A day at the beach is never one of them.

No matter how much you love that Prada handbag, there’s no good reason to lug it to the beach. Go with something lower-brow that you won’t worry about leaving unattended with your beach towels and sunscreen – a light, bright summer tote or beach bag will do the trick.

Sunglasses, like sunscreen is a beach absolute, but beware the raccoon tan lines. Shades that cover half your face have a glamorous look to them, as though you’re dodging the paparazzi. But wear them all day at the beach and you might wind up with some regrettable tan lines.

For the perfect beach outfit pair swimsuits in print with denim shorts and stylish shades; use colorful cover-ups; add a fedora and retro shades for glam; and finish with colored flip flops.

Date Night

Give the LBD a rest when on a summer date. Use warm weather as an excuse to break out the Brights. A colorful dress is an ideal way to make a day or evening date a little more glam.

Bright colors like oranges and pinks in a pretty slip dress will make you stand out in the dark evening hours.

Mix up your evening-wear options with an unforgettable full-length summer gown. Large floral prints are fun and flirty, but don’t forget the belt to give yourself some shape.

Be popsicle sweet in a sherbet-hue dress. A mid-length dress can take you from day (think blazer and scarf) to night, in seconds.  When wearing a bold floral dress, pick shoes and a bag in lighter colors to keep the focus on the frock.

Draw attention to your neckline and gorge face by pairing a cool necklace with a pretty halter-neck top or dress. Get your shine on by slipping into a silky dress that hugs you in all the right places. Pick one in a color that flatters your skin tone or a halter neckline to keep the attention up top, on your pretty face and fab smile.

For a big night out, try cool colors like swimming-pool blue and green shorts. They’re a fun way to add some sizzle to your nighttime looks. Shorts are great for summer days or nights when paired with a relaxed, easy printed T-shirt and flat sandals or wedges.

Whether it’s your birthday or just a normal summer night out, slip into a sparkly dress the color of stardust for a night of fun and dancing.

Sightseeing

I always spend a whole day sightseeing or museum hoping when on holiday, and while khaki may work for some tourists, I prefer to stay stylish and comfortable. Miniskirts and shorts can look very cute for a day of sightseeing. Team it up with a well fitted t-shirt and belt. Choose footwear that is comfy and that goes with the look. Flats work great for a casual look, or even canvas shoes if you want to give it a sporty-casual feel.

Never underestimate the versatility of a little floral romper. Paired with lilac peep-toe pumps and loose waves, the vibe is relaxed-chic. Want to go super casual? Try gladiator sandals and a chunky scarf. The right way to do gladiator sandals is with a short and breezy dress that gives you enough legroom to run a marathon—or your afternoon itinerary.

Rely on the wear-everywhere shirtdress but keep the look stress-free with a floppy hat, strappy sandals and a roomy carries-the-kitchen-sink satchel. A great hat packs a powerful fashion punch because you can dress a hat up or dress it down

Simple outfits like white tops and blue jeans with some statement jewelry are perfect for summer sightseeing, add a pair of glam wedges and you’re good to go.

Pool Party

Wearing a bathing suit isn't a must - try a strapless romper or maxi dress. Both keep you cool with no strap lines while hanging out by the pool.

Whether you are cooling off in the shallow end of the pool, or taking a turn on the water slide, try a simple black bikini, or a patterned one-piece for cool but appropriate look (leave the Brazilian/Angolan cut at home, no one needs to see that while eating a sosatie).

As the afternoon sets in, pop on a white tank and cutoffs over your suit for a relaxed and comfortable sit down at the food table. .

Black and white is huge this summer and print is a season must. Add wedges and playful jewelry to make a pool party outfit complete. But let’s be frank here - please don’t go swimming in heels and jewelry, but for the initial meet and greet it’s a good idea to be a bit more pulled together, especially if you’re at a year-end function. When the time comes to jump in and make a splash, pack away your pretty heels and jewelry…that’s what the giant tote or straw bag is for.

Summer Wedding

This being the prime season for nuptials, you may probably be heading to a summer wedding.  It may not be your special day, but that doesn't mean you don’t deserve to look gorgeous. The problem is that dressing for a summer wedding can be tricky. Here are some basic Dos and Don’ts compliments of the Budget Fashionista:

Do
- Wear summer colors like turquoise, melon, strawberry, and green

- Wear cute pumps and/or sandals for an inside wedding/reception

- Wear a solid colour like black or navy (with color) to an evening wedding

Don’t
- Wear white, unless the bride requests it.
- Wear black to an afternoon/morning wedding. Pick something colorful
- Wear heels for an outside wedding/reception (your heel with get stuck in the grass)
- Wear ultra low cut dresses, short-short dresses, shorts. If you wouldn't want your grandma to see you in it, then don’t wear it.

It may be summer, but that’s not an excuse to wear shorts and a tank top to a wedding. While others may wear jeans to their friend’s special day, a fashionista doesn't stray from decorum. Show the bride and groom that you understand the importance of their wedding and dress up.

That said weddings now have color themes, so if the invite is red and blue, you may not want to wear that color because the bride and bridesmaids will probably be wearing something of that hue.

Because you’re probably wearing a light, breezy dress, you should also go light on the jewelry and makeup. Cumbersome baubles look awkward with an airy ensemble, so trade your chandelier earrings for pearls or studs. A little bling goes a long way in the summer time. Keep it light, and you’ll look and feel better.

Prepare To Trend

Spring! The first day of September brought the return of summer time on our watches and clocks, my one year wedding anniversary and a brand new fashion season - all wonderful reasons for joyous celebration. There’s nothing better than that ‘newness’ feeling in the air. And of course with the new season comes New York Fashion Week, new runway trends and, the piece de resistance of glossy fashion magazines- THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE.

As temperatures begin to rise more flesh goes on display - an unsettling thought for winter fitness slackers and pale un-tanned bodies. But not to worry, your friendly fashion advisor at The Style Element is to the rescue. This week I give you my three favourite Spring/Summer trends, and accompanying fitness tips to help you look good enough to rock them.  (You’re welcome)

Vintage-Inspired Swimwear

There’s a scene in 1956′s High Society where Grace Kelly kneels poolside and pushes a model boat, the True Love, across the still water. She’s wearing a white halter neck swimsuit that ends in a small, ruffled skirt; her chin-length hair is neatly curled, her feet are bare. Never has a swimsuit looked so elegant.

Of course it’s the bombshells - the pin-ups, of the same era we’re more inclined to think of when it comes to 1950s swimsuits, in particular – Marilyn Monroe. The 50s was the highlight of her playful, curvaceous, steeped in sex appeal persona.

These two women underline the fact that vintage-style swimwear has a place amongst 2013 swimwear trends.  The modern twist is a subtle infusion of vintage cuts and prints – and can be as bombshell as Monroe or as sophisticated as Kelly. This season it’s all about high waisted bikini bottoms as a way to inject a slight vintage feel into otherwise modern swimwear.

How to prepare: Tony Greco (also known as the Bikini Whisperer) created the Ultimate Best Bikini Workout for Glamour Magazine, that will help tone up abs, thighs, and butt—the areas on full display in your average two-piece.

Bodycon Dress

Bodycon dresses first came to prominence in the nineties, rising in popularity for the sleek lines they created on the female figure. The term refers to, and is an abbreviation of, body conscious - as this is definitely a dress worn to highlight the body.

A bodycon dress is essentially a tight fitting, figure hugging dress, made from elasticized material or composite material such as spandex or lycra. They tend to be short in length, usually falling to about mid-thigh level, with the occasional longer styles.

Due to its tightness, this style of dress certainly isn't flattering for all figures. Ideally this dress works best on a woman with an hourglass shape. Women with an athletic build, or small hips and bust will find that the bodycon does nothing for them. Similarly a pear shape figure, that is hips that are much larger than the bust, will want to steer clear of this dress. Remember, the bodycon will only highlight your ‘problem’ areas and will fail to capitalise on your other natural assets.

How to prepare: Follow the ‘Eat to Lose Pounds’ eating plan created by Women’s Health to lose weight fast and safely within seven days.

Bermuda Shorts

The slouchy, cool-girl shorts that were all over the New York runways this season are perfect for every girl who never felt like she could pull off those cheek-baring cutoffs so beloved on Instagram (i.e. most of us). Done properly, they’re ultra chic, fam-friendly, and flattering on anyone.

If the idea of short shorts fills you with dread, but you still want to partake in summer's favoured pant, seek comfort in the Bermuda. While in the past you might have been reluctant to wear these knee-length shorts, this season's rendition is anything but frumpy. Imitate the spring runway and style with feminine or edgy accents. While solid colors, preferably in darker tones, work best for the office, playful prints and denim-styled shorts are great options for more casual settings. As for the most flattering pairs, look for a slim-cut design that tapers down your leg that you can pair with feminine tops like a peplum and high heels.

How to prepare: Get lean legs by starting this workout, created by Marcela Ceselka, a personal trainer at Club H Fitness in New York City, targets every inch of your lower body—glutes, quads, hamstrings, hips, inner thighs, and calves.

Interview With The Glorious Gloria Kavetu

Clicking through fashion channels recently, I thought about how brilliant it would be to interview a professional model; someone who has graced runways and fitted designer clothes. It then dawned on me that Namibia has produced two winners of the prestigious Face of Africa model search. My arbitrary musings led me to a Facebook search, which eventually landed me an interview with the first ever Miss Face of Namibia.

Gloria Kavetu, the girl with the golden smile and golden heart, happily agreed to answer my fashion questions. Born in Okahandja, Gloria started modeling and taking part in beauty pageants at the tender age of 8. And because she grew up in a small town she had to learn about the fashion industry the hard way - by watching fashion TV and by practicing.

I think her efforts paid off. Read what she had to say about fashion, style and the essence of beauty.

Were you always a well dressed girl, or was there a time in your life when you can honestly say you had no fashion sense?

I started modeling at a very young age so dressing up and looking good has always been a part of who I am.  But I do agree I have my moments when I’m averagely dressed in a pair of jeans and a tank top. After all it’s not what you wear; it’s how you wear it. I shop in any shop, doesn't matter where. The trick is all about how I put it together.

You looked amazing at that NAMAS, what inspired your dress design?

I contacted Nikola Conradie, one of the best designers in Namibia. I told her I wanted something elegant yet sexy for the Namibian Music Awards, and she put everything together. That’s why I love her, she never disappoints!

I couldn't agree with you more, Nikola is fabulous. In fact I saw you model her designs at the 99FM and Jamsson Fashion Show. Where, would you say you get your fashion ideas and tips from?

I love beautiful things, whether its clothing items or interior decor. So, I’m constantly browsing the internet and magazines for the latest fashion trends.

I hope you consider reading my blog more often. Gloria, There is probably a lot of pressure on the Face of Namibia to look good at all times, how do you handle that?

Yes people expect me to look good all the time, but I don't dress to impress people. I dress because I love looking good.

So how would you describe your style?

“Simple with a touch of elegance”

What is the one item of clothing that you can wear every day?

A pair of jeans suits any occasion.

Who then, is your celebrity fashion icon?

Blake Lively.

I love Blake Lively’s style! She really knows how to put an outfit together. In your opinion, what was your best dressed moment?

The NAMAS was my best dress moment; maybe it’s because the dress was made specifically for me.

And your worst?

I wouldn't say I had one…or maybe I’m just not aware of it. (She laughs)

Finally Gloria, Face of Namibia is a pageant that was designed to celebrate the beauty of Namibian women. As the name implies the pageant aims to incorporate aspects of tradition, culture and the growing acceptance of beauty. What do you think the essence of style and beauty is?

I think the essence of style and beauty is the person you really are. Your style makes people aware of who you are - whether you have good taste depends on how you put it together, to get that final product. I believe beauty is who you are on the inside; it’s your personality that makes you beautiful.

Gloria was crowned Face of Namibia in September 2011 and has clearly used her former title to grow and positively influence the beauty industry in Namibia. Not only has she modeled for top local designers, but in 2012 she launched a Dental Health Campaign at SOS Children Village.  She is truly a special woman, and it was a pleasure to do an interview with her.

Trending Thursday: Faux-Punk French Braid

After seeing this fresh and funky hairstyle on Selena Gomez, I had to give it a whirl. Now, I am not one with much hair foresight or vision, so to try this on a Thursday morning before work, was as risky as licking an ice sculpture at a wedding reception. But this is a beautiful hairstyle, edgy from the sides, elegant from the front, and romantic in the back, this style looks great from every angle and can offer terrific contrast to a glam dress.

Should you want to try it, here is a how-to compliments of Glamour.com and Boston hairstylist Nicholas Penna, owner of SalonCapri

1. Prep. Because braids hold best in hair that has slightly "grungy" texture, Nick recommends washing hair the day before styling. For added texture and volume, he uses dry shampoo at the roots and applies a coat of volumizer.

2. Tease. Using a teasing comb or paddle brush, tease the top front section of your crown. Nick starts at the back and works forward, focusing on the roots, then secures with a light mist of

3. Braid. Begin your French braid at the very top of your head, behind the teased section, carefully and tightly combing sections on the side into the braid and incorporating them as you go. Continue to braid down the nape of the neck and secure with a clear elastic band.

4. Tug. The secret to getting Selena’s rocker grunge look? Nick goes through the braid by hand and gently loosens each section, pulling out pieces where needed to create a more tousled look. Bobby-pin your braid where needed to secure the style, and finish with a full coat of spray to set your strands.
hairspray. You can comb a little atop the teased section for a smoother top.

Spring Trend Alert: Blue and White

According to the Glamour September issue, mixing 'azure and white' is one of the hottest trends right now. This is a fresh and 'oceanic' update to any outfit.

I just so happened to be wearing this power combo on the day I bought my beloved mag and was incidentally also the day when i did my first 'outfit of the day' upload on Twitter.

Hot On Ice: The Skater Dress

With the weather neither here nor there, I decided to feature the biggest ‘on the fence’ trend of the year – the Skater Dress. The trend isn't exactly new as it traces back to the 80s - inspired by ice skating costumes, where it derives its name. It saw a revival in the 90s as the babydoll dress, and now with the comeback of the Spice Girls decade, it is only natural that the skater dress would pop up again.

The dress has a trademark cut; fitted at the waistline, full circle skirt and skims over the hips and thighs. The length of the skirt is typically designed to fall mid-thigh.

The cut of the dress is perfect for any body shape. Apple-shaped and pear-shaped girls can easily rock this trend, and look good doing it. Hourglass-shaped gals will love this dress because the skater dress will hug you gently around your curves making you look ultra feminine (A La Kim Kardashian). Skater dresses give you the perfect A-Line silhouette. I wore mine to the 99FM and JamesonAutumn/Winter Fashion Show.

When it’s hot out, wear your skater dress on its own, accessorizing minimally. Skinny belts can be utilized to offer a little bit structure to your getup and give it a more polished look. My favourite add-on is a top hat and 90s rounded shades, to give that throwback chic vibe. Alternatively, layer it with a blazer or a cardigan when it’s chilly. The short skater dress can also be worn as a tunic top, so pair it up with your favourite leggings or skinny jeans.

Another beautiful thing about the skater dress is that it is very versatile. It can be worn on any occasion - whether to a party, to work, to church, on a random day when you just feel like being cute.

The skater dress has never been as popular as it is right now, and could be considered the perfect dress.  It’s cute, flirty and will flatter all shapes and sizes while hiding any and all lower body “flaws”.  An added bonus if you love twirling around in a dress or skirt, is that the skater dress will be the ultimate twirl-inducing dress making you feel young and vibrant.

Check out my post, A Fashion Forecast, to see what other 90s trends are making a comeback this summer.

How to Walk In Heels

My feet are killing me! Any woman who has ever fallen in love with a gorgeous pair of six inch heels will probably recognize this cry of pain. Wearing high heels is a lot like dishing that extra slice of chocolate cake- you must have it, but just cannot seem to manage it. To help you stay stylish and healthy, I give you some tips on how to walk in high heels (trust me; your feet will thank me later).

KNOW YOUR SHOE

THE BODY: If a stiff shoe causes blisters, spritz this area of the shoe with water and use your fingers to mold the softened leather to the shape of your foot or try special inserts to reduce friction. Genuine leather shoes will reduce blisters and fit your foot more comfortably.

THE BREAST: The inner arch of the heel, which affects stability. The farther forward the arch, the less you will feel off-balance.

THE SOLE: Slipping on slick floors? Pick up a pair of sole protectors or score the soles of your heels with a key to create extra traction.

THE TOE BOX: If your toes feel pinched, have this area stretched out at your local shoe repair shop.

THE INTERIOR: If you suffer from low arches, slip in supports to relieve pressure on the balls of your feet; this will also help you stay on your feet longer.

TAKE IT STEP-BY-STEP

1. POSTURE: Heels pitch weight forward, so for balance, keep your head up and shoulders back. Hit the gym and tighten your core, this will offset some of the pressure on your feet.

2. STEPS: Striding in a normal heel-to-toe motion can snap a stiletto or twist an ankle. Instead, think ballroom dancing and take short steps, going down evenly on the ball of the foot and heel.

3. WEIGHT: As your weight shifts fully onto a foot, spread your toes in the shoe slightly; this will help to distribute the weight onto the ball of the foot.

4. HIPS: When you're feeling off-balance, you tend to stiffen up. For an easy, attractive momentum, let your hips swing in small, sideways, figure-eight motions. This will not only make you look more comfortable, but will help you achieve the ‘gliding walk’ demonstrated to Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality.

GET THE RIGHT SUPPORT

1. WHOLE-SOLE CUSHIONS: A comfort insole that's tapered at the front so your toes won't feel crowded.

2. WEIGHT SHIFTERS: This sized insert sits in the breast of the shoe, shifting weight off the ball of the foot and back onto the heel.

3.TOE GELS: Provides cushioning under the ball of the foot to protect the area where most of your weight is centered.

4.OPEN-TOE STOPPERS: A shorter insole that provides the same shock absorption without being seen through your peep-toes.

5. ARCH SUPPORTS: If your arches are low or need a boost, these supports will help relieve pressure on the balls of your feet.

6. HEEL PADS: Liners that help keep feet from slipping around inside shoes.

TAKE TIME TO SOOTHE AND REPAIR

Leonardo da Vinci once said, “The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art”. Looking after your ‘masterpiece’ is the key ingredient to walking beautifully in high heels.

Set time aside to refresh tired feet with a tingly foot treatment. Also try kneading away sore spots and stimulate blood flow to help your feet

recover from a day in uncomfortable shoes. Grab your mom’s old bathroom staple, the callus stone, to keep calluses and rough spots at bay.

Happy strutting!
